The Group's owner

The Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY) was founded in 1868. The Union has over 31,000 members. All those who are studying for a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree at the University of Helsinki are members of the Student Union. Post-graduate students may also enrol as members of the Student Union. The Student Union acts as a liaison for its members and promotes their societal, social and intellectual aims, as well as their goals for their studies and the position of students in society.

The Student Union funds its operations with membership fees and revenues from the capital in the contingency fund; the capital in the fund comes from the profits distributed by the HYY Group. During the past few years, membership fees funded about one-third of operations, while the remaining two-thirds were funded with revenues from the contingency fund.

The students responsible for the administration of the Student Union have a direct influence on the HYY Group’s operations. For example, they specify the strategic policy lines of operations. In addition, the members of the Student Union are strongly represented in all the administrative bodies of the HYY Group and its Group companies.
